After this course

What you'll be able to do yourself.

The stair is the detail most often miscalculated, and your feet know its rhythm by heart. This course teaches you to work out risers and treads from the finished floor, read concrete and steel stair sections, and detail nosings, handrails and guards.

  1. 1Explain why small differences between risers are dangerous.
  2. 2Work out the number of steps from finished floor to finished floor.
  3. 3Check a stair against the limits for riser, tread, landing and pitch.
  4. 4Draw a concrete stair section with finish, nosing and waist slab.
  5. 5Detail safe handrails and guards.

Good for

  • Drafters drawing stairs for houses and buildings.
  • Architecture students new to detailing.
  • Foremen and supervisors who check steps on site.

No. Every drawing in the course is an illustration for learning, not for construction. Use them to understand the logic, then follow your firm's standard and your engineer's drawings.
