After this course

What you'll be able to do yourself.

This course starts from what you see on site: concrete being watered, stained wall bases, thick roof slabs that still leak. You learn how water behaves in a building, then read it on the detail drawing. The illustrations are for learning, and a problem in a real building still needs an expert to look at it.

  1. 1Explain why concrete hardens by hydration and what suffers when curing is skipped
  2. 2Tell mix water from curing water and work out the water-cement ratio
  3. 3Explain capillary rise, salts and what trasram does at the base of a wall
  4. 4Point out the leak-prone spots on a flat roof and work out its fall
  5. 5Read the layers of a parapet and a wet floor on a detail sheet
  6. 6Use the principle of leading water out when judging a joint

Good for

  • Architecture and civil engineering students who want the reasons behind details
  • Junior drafters who often draw without knowing why
  • New site supervisors who want to keep up with the foreman

Full syllabus

Chapter by chapter, nothing hidden.

27 lessons, 2h 45m in total. Chapter 1 is open to everyone.

Chapter 1Concrete and waterFreeWhy concrete hardens because of water, not because it dries, and what happens when curing is skipped.6 lessons / 37 min
  1. Fresh concrete gets watered on purpose5 min
  2. Mix water, curing water and early cracks5 min
  3. The language of the pour4 min
  4. Water, cement and concrete age7 min
  5. The foreman in a hurry to strip6 min
  6. Chapter 1 test10 min
Chapter 2Water that climbs from belowCapillary rise at the wall base, salts that push paint off, and wet floors that have to stay watertight.7 lessons / 42 min
  1. Ground water climbs walls without a pump5 min
  2. Three conditions for water to get in5 min
  3. Words for water and walls4 min
  4. Build up a bathroom floor6 min
  5. Find the fault in a wet floor6 min
  6. The stain line at the wall base6 min
  7. Chapter 2 test10 min
Chapter 3Flat roofs that leakWater rarely goes through the middle of the concrete. It gets in at corners, pipes, drains and construction joints.7 lessons / 45 min
  1. A thick concrete roof slab still leaks5 min
  2. A slight fall ends the ponding5 min
  3. Work out the fall of a flat roof7 min
  4. Build up the roof edge6 min
  5. Find the fault in a parapet6 min
  6. A roof leaking after one year6 min
  7. Chapter 3 test10 min
Chapter 4Rain and jointsFrom the stone spouts of Borobudur to your own gutter: rain always gets in at joints, so it has to be led out.7 lessons / 41 min
  1. Borobudur's stone spouts against the rain5 min
  2. From the temple to your gutter5 min
  3. Words for rainwater4 min
  4. Adjust the membrane upstand5 min
  5. Read the roof edge from a model6 min
  6. The gutter drawn last6 min

Slide the value. The drawing follows, just like in the lessons.

The membrane ends above ponding level. A common rule of thumb: at least 150 to 200 mm above the roof finish.

  • Nadia Kusuma

    Interior architect

The failure cases were the most useful part. Now I know what to ask my senior.

  • Dimas Prakoso

    Architecture student, final year

I used to memorise terms without knowing why. After the moisture chapter I finally understood why the wall at my parents' house keeps peeling.

  • Intan Permatasari

    Civil engineering student

The explanations start from what happens on site, not from a formula. My lecture notes finally make sense.

Questions that come up

About this course.

All questions

01

What can I try for free?

All of chapter 1, "Concrete and water": 6 lessons, about 37 min. No card needed. If it isn't for you, stop there.

02

What should I know before starting?

Nothing in particular. The course starts from what you see on a drawing and on site, and builds from there.

03

Subscribe or buy this course?

Pro is Rp149.000 a month and opens every course, track, exam and certificate. Buying this course is Rp279.000 once and it stays yours. If you plan to take more than two courses, Pro usually comes out cheaper.

04

Do I get a certificate?

Certificates come from track exams, not single courses. This course counts toward Building Science. The exam runs 60 minutes and you pass at 75 percent.

05

Can I use these drawings on a project?

No. Every drawing in the course is an illustration for learning, not for construction. Use them to understand the logic, then follow your firm's standard and your engineer's drawings.
